Patchwork flags, made using the technology of quilting to experiment with new ways of representing identity, value, and belonging.

Decomposition Flag / Flag for the Future

This flag was the first of the bunch, an experiment during Quarantine 2020. I started off calling it "Flag of the Future", or sometimes "Flag for the Future", the idea being that the images, colors, and patterns I'd chosen represented the future I wanted to call forth. For me this served as an alternative to current widely known flags that represent states/borders/nations, one that could more intentionally highlight the relationships between many patched together parts, scraps that could become a cohesive whole.

I decided to "fly" this flag with the hope / belief that the intention and energy I put it into making it could be carried by the wind out into the world to be pollinated. Over the course of 5 years, this flag flew in my yard, steadily becoming faded, whipped, drenched, and eventually shredded by the elements. I found it beautiful at all its stages. When the flag was pretty much spent I gave it a new name: "Decomposition Flag" and displayed it in my installation Cosmic Compost in 2025.
